When you have kids the “Why” questions cup runneth over all the time. Usually these quirky yet good questions come up in our van rides across town or at our dinner table in the evenings.
Originally this holiday was in honor of our first president George Washington. It was celebrated on his birthday, February 22nd.
Wait! Hold the phone! We rarely if ever celebrate this on the 22nd, right?
Well, this is due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed back in 1968 and put into effect in 1971. This Act changed several of our well known holidays to Monday celebrations. It gave workers three day weekends and retailers the ideas for great sales/promotions.
Other holidays also affected: Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
The shift to Monday for Presidents Day led many to believe that the change was due to recognizing more than Washington for this holiday. Since Lincoln was also born in February they both became attached to this holiday instantly. However, now you know that the original intent was to celebrate one of our most popular founding fathers and his successors.
