What was used as a coffee substitute during the American Civil War?

I wonder if this fact is in the textbooks. Coffee by far was the most popular beverage in the North and the South. It was especially loved by soldiers. The North did not run out of coffee. During the war the South ran out of coffee so they used a substitute which was referred to as Lincoln Coffee. Share this with the kids so they can contribute in class with a smile.
