Turtle Fun Facts

A turtle is a tortoise, but a tortoise isn’t a turtle.

May 23rd is World Turtle Day!

They can smell with their throats using their Jacobson Organ on the roofs of their mouths.

Their shells are sensitive to touch.

Turtles that live in warmer climates have lighter shell colors than those that live in cooler climates.

They have both an endoskeleton and a exoskeleton.

A group of tortoises are called a creep.

Some aquatic turtles can absorb oxygen through the skin on their neck allowing them to remain submerged underwater for long periods of time and enabling them to hibernate underwater.

When in danger the green turtle can swim almost 20 miles an hour to escape.

Some land turtles can actually out run a human on level ground.
